Starting a quilting business while you are on unemployment and during a recession is not something a parent would wish on their child, even when their child reaches her seventies. Matter of fact, my very wise mother once advised me never to go into business. For one thing, having been raised by a father who wasn’t a good businessman partly because he was a dreamer, she always thought I took after him and didn’t think I had the good business acumen I would need to succeed. In many ways she was right.
One lady I was fortunate to know didn’t agree with that. Veronika Noize, small business marketing guru,, urged me to not only go into the quilting business, but she changed my focus from quilting for others to making quilts to sell to others. I consulted her for about a year and I tribute any success I had have in this business to her excellent guidance – certainly – but even more to her unfailing support and encouragement. She has helped hundreds to succeed and is one of the warmest, wisest, funniest and smartest women I know.
I wanted to thank her in some way unique and so made the little wall hanging above. It my first experiment with portraiture and I just had fun with it, down to the pearl earrings. With two brassy buttons I made a hanger for 15 different famous quotes which she could interchange. I knew that one of her favorite quotes was “Everything you see I owe to chocolate.” ( A takeoff on Sophia Loren’s famous quote, “Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.”) So I simply came up with 14 more. The one above might be my motto, wise words by cartoonist Scott Adams, “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”
This last quote is perhaps my second favorite quote: “In the end, it’s not going to matter how many breaths you take, but how many moments took your breath away.”
