Story Quilt -Slightly different from the memory quilt, there is the story quilt itself. Story quilts might tell a personal journey (see Tracy’s Story Quilt) or be a fantasy quilt adorning a child’s room (see the jungle quilt above in the Wall Hanging display above.) Fabric is a unique medium for story-telling. Below is a great example of how one story quilt came about:

Dana Greyson, Certified Mediator and Communication Coach, Positive Change Mediation, was upgrading the decor of her new office. Joy Overstreet, a Practical Feng Shui consultant based in Vancouver, Washington, offers feng shui consultations and classes and she suggested displaying a fabric story to not only enhance the office atmosphere with warmth and beauty but also to illustrate the difficulties one can encounter in communication. Dana chose the fable of the Six Blind Men and an Elephant and I made the quilt shown below for her.

When Dana viewed the final product, she said, “Rosie’s design and fabric choices are both beautiful and brilliant; they really bring home the elegant simplicity that make the story so powerful. ”

Polka Dot Duvet – My client had always wanted a polka dot duvet but had never seen one she could buy. When she realized that she could design her own quilt (a duvet is simply quilted less than a regular quilt – or not at all), she was ecstatic. The quilt shown below is entirely her design and has a high loft. To keep it from being too dense, I very lightly quilted it. The dots have extra batting to make them stand out a bit. She couldn’t find a ruffle to match it, so I made the bed ruffle as well, sewing all the dots on my hand. My client tells me that her cats love the duvet as much as she does.

Round Wall Hanging – I made my first round quilt right before I actually started this business. It was a commission for my boss. He and his wife had a beach house, and they wanted a wall hanging which would be a certain size. After planning a unique Mariner’s Compass quilt (I stole the idea right off the page of Judy Mathieson’s Mariner’s Compass book.), I discovered that it was too big as a rectangular quilt, so I made it round. This caused my boss to come up with a unique welded circular piece of metal circle that stretched out the quilt and allowed it to be hung on the wall.

This was the most complex quilt I have ever made. I used Judy Mathieson’s paper piecing technique. I know some quilters hate to paper piece, but using Judy’s method made it enjoyable and possible!
